Restoration and functional conversion of the former school in Gherdeal

The project aims to restore and reactivate the former school in the village of Gherdeal, Sibiu County, a 19th-century historical monument in an advanced state of degradation. The intervention focuses on preserving the architectural value and original materiality, while integrating contemporary functions with educational, community, and cultural characteristics. The works include the complete reconstruction of the roof structure and covering, reinforcement of the existing walls, interior reorganization adapted to new uses, restoration of the original joinery, and reactivation of the infrastructure. It is proposed to lower certain floor levels in a controlled manner, thermally insulate the spaces under the roof, introduce a heat pump heating system, and implement discreet solutions for technical installations. The principles of the intervention include respect for authenticity, clarity between old and new, material compatibility, and functional adaptability in a rural context. The new layout allows for flexible use of the spaces for local activities, without compromising the historical character of the building.
